The CW has enough superheroes for one lifetime, between Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, to say nothing of DC outliers like FOX’s Gotham. Well, get ready for another superhero (or villain?) to join the ranks in 2017, as those in the know say there’s another DC TV series on the way

If there’s one arrival Gotham fans are more excited for than The Dark Knight himself, it’s the return of Cameron Monaghan’s proto-Joker “Jerome.” 2017 trailers made clear we’d see the character again, but does a new premiere photo from “Smile Like You Mean It” reveal a familiar faceless grin? Might there be a bizarre tie-in with The Dark Knight itself?

The success of Preacher certainly opened TV doors for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, most recently with the Hulu order of Josh Hutcherson series Future Man. Now, Rogen and Goldberg are at it again two-fold, eyeing a sidekick inversion for a new FOX superhero series, and an Illuminati spoof for ABC.

It remains to be seen if FOX’s Sleepy Hollow can actually pull of revamping the series without the chemistry of Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie, but at least we know when the experiment begins. FOX and Will Forte’s Last Man on Earth most always keeps its pop-culture references on the surface, save for anyone noticing Betty Draper in their midsts. Last year paid what seemed to be a quick homage to January Jones’ Mad Men past, but Sunday’s Season 3 premiere saw Betty finally get even with an awesome cameo.

Not that Gotham has ever stood as a pillar of comic adaptations, but executive producer Bruno Heller made some surprising comments in recent weeks, to suggest “I don’t think superheroes work very well on TV” overall. Now, producers attempt to clarify the remarks, saying “some things are better executed in film and some things are better executed in TV.”
