One of the saddest aspects about the American film industry’s inexplicable inability to get the Fantastic Four right is the lack of a worthy cinematic representation of their primary foe, the menacing, megalomaniacal, mysterious Doctor Doom. He’s a great character, with all the gravitas of a disgraced royal (he rules over the fictitious kingdom of Latveria, which is not the same as Latvia, in one of my childhood’s most major disappointments) and the volatility of a man driven by revenge. His mythology — the trademark green cape and metal faceplate, his grandiloquent manner of speaking — has already inspired at least one legend in the world of music, and now the movies will finally catch up.
As one of Comic-Con's oldest guests, Sideshow Collectibles has one of the largest footprints at the annual San Diego event of any exhibitor. It's a good thing too because Sideshow hosts works from a number of companies it helps distribute in the states, as well as putting on a showcase for its own products. This year's offerings ran the gamut from the comic book worlds of Marvel and DC, to the cinematic universes of both, with a healthy dose of Star Wars interspersed to keep things groovy.
If you watch a lot of movie trailers you may have noticed a new trend in film advertising, one that is quickly coming to rival the rise of sad covers of pop songs or Imagine Dragon soundtracks: The use of the phrase “visionary director” to hype a particular filmmaker’s involvement in a movie. Though the phrase has appeared occasionally in coming attractions throughout the years, it seems to have risen substantially in popularity in the last couple months. There were two “visionary” trailers in just the last week.
