There are three things that define Mario as an icon. The first is his mustache, the second is his overalls, and the third is that bright red cap. Over the years, Mario's worn a number of different outfits, but the mustache and the hat have always been a central part of identifying Nintendo's star mascot. With Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo is finally giving the hat a bit more of a purpose, and a personality. By making Mario's chapeau a living, breathing character with its own abilities, Super Mario Odyssey opens a range of possibilities that are a lot of fun to explore.

Here’s a bit of a thought experiment. What, in your estimation, are major movie studios for? In the most basic and obvious terms, they exist to finance, facilitate the production of, and distribute motion pictures. But it’s not that simple — what ambitions should that work represent? Does a studio use its clout, resources, and organization to endorse art, to give a voice (and budget) to filmmakers who can entertain and challenge us, hopefully well enough to make a tidy sum for the studio as well? Or is the lone purpose of a movie studio to generate money, film production just happening to be the method by which they’ve chosen to do that?

Watch a Supercut of Every Example of Product Placement in Michael Bay’s Movies

If I had to pick the most egregious example of product placement ever, I would nominate the scene from Transformers: Age of Extinction, when the entire movie stops to examine the wreckage of a crash involving an alien spaceship and a Bud Light truck. The camera pans across a street littered with Bud Light bottles; then Mark Wahlberg picks one up, cracks it open, and takes a healthy swig. And while he’s shilling beer, there’s a second product placement in the background; just over his shoulder, very much in focus, is a giant Goodyear Tires sign.
