Damon Albarn Thinks Kanye West ‘Trapped’ Paul McCartney in an ‘Abusive’ Collaboration With Rihanna
Albarn—who is set to drop a new Gorillaz album tomorrow (June 30), The Now Now, and also recently teamed up with Snoop Dogg again for a song on project, "Hollywood"— spoke with French Magazine Nouvel Obs where he expressed how upset his was with Kanye's treatment of McCartney during their collaboration with Rihanna.
“Do not get me started on Kanye West,” Albarn said in the interview. “Kanye West trapped Paul McCartney.”
Albarn goes on to call the one-off single, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, "rude" and "not good."
“It’s rude, it’s not good," Albarn said. "I have a problem with this abusive collaboration: we’re talking about Paul McCartney, anyway! Kanye West thinks only about Kanye West, uses a name to make headlines, to say ‘McCartney is in my song’ and puts McCartney in the video, but not in the song itself …"
Albarn was so incensed at the idea of Kanye working with McCartney that he actually contacted the Beatles icon and tried to warn him against it.
“Before he decided to work with Kanye West, I sent a text message to McCartney saying, ‘beware’, but he ignored it, he does what he wants, it’s Paul McCartney," Albarn said, adding, "Kanye West is one of those people who feed on other people. “
McCartney (who is credited on the song and appears in the black and white video with Rihanna playing the guitar) doesn't share Albarn's disdain for Kanye. He says the collaboration went without hitch, and felt "lucky" Kanye wanted to work with him because he digs "diversity."
“We ended up just talking a lot,” said McCartney told DIY earlier this month about working on the song with 'Ye. “I played a few little things and one of them ended up as ‘FourFiveSeconds’ with Rihanna. It’s more a question of me feeling lucky that these people are interested [in working with me] and think that I can bring something to it. For me, I feel great. I like diversity.”
He says Kanye just spent a lot of time staring at pictures of his wife, Kim Kardashian, on his computer while they were working, but he was cool with that too.
“We had two or three afternoons where we just hung out together in a Beverly Hills hotel in the bungalows out the back, and he had his engineer and was set up with a couple of microphones in case anything happened,” McCartney said. “I was tootling around on guitar, and Kanye spent a lot of time just looking at pictures of Kim [Kardashian] on his computer. I’m thinking, ‘are we ever gonna get around to writing?!’
“But it turns out he was writing. That’s his muse. He was listening to this riff I was doing and obviously he knew in his mind that he could use that, so he took it, sped it up and then somehow he got Rihanna to sing on it. She’s a big favorite of mine anyway, so that just came without me lifting a finger.”
