If you were a former customer of Coffee Port on West 16th Street or you're looking for a great cup of coffee near State Fair Community College you'll love the new Queen City Coffee Company in the same space as Coffee Port.

Hillary and Justin Hubbs bought the Coffee Port business, and in 11 days managed to get through Sedalia's inspection and permitting process while making the business tweaks necessary to re-open with a refreshed name Queen City Coffee Company.

Hillary says she chose the name as a nod to Sedalia's history as a railroad town. Back in the 1870s, many railroad towns referred to themselves as "The Queen City" and Sedalia was one. Additionally, she wanted a connection to the town's history because she's been a lifelong resident.

Some of the tweaks the Hubbs' have made to the coffee shop include using local coffee beans from Ozark Coffee and teas from Hugo Tea Company in North Kansas City. Additionally, Hillary told me that the folks at Ozark Coffee have been great mentors in helping her and Justin get the business off the ground, especially since the couple went from business purchase to opening in two weeks.

Justin's full-time business is Big Iron Realty, while Hillary is an instructional coach for Sedalia 200 at Horace Mann Elementary. Instrumental in helping them open so quickly and bringing their experience to the table are a couple of former Coffee Port employees the couple continues to employ.

Hillary has lowered the drink prices, and the food menu has been slimmed down a bit since the Coffee Port days. That said, the popular crepes are still available along with a variety of pastries that vary from day to day. In addition to coffee drinks, tea, crepes, and pastries Queen City Coffee Company offers Italian sodas, refreshers, and smoothies.

Hillary says Queen City Coffee Company hopes to become part of the community and they hope their place becomes a place for State Fair Community College students to come and hang out or study, as well as a place where the community will come and relax. They hope to make their space available after hours to different local businesses or groups looking to hold events in the not-too-distant future.

I tried one of the crepes, a mocha, and a chocolate chip scone while I spoke to Hillary and Justin about their new business venture and both the scone and mocha were delicious.
