You see, earning $100,000 out in California or New York, isn't the same as earning $100,000 in Texas or Missouri or even Tennessee. It all has to do with how much stuff costs where you are. I wouldn't even think of living in places like New York City or San Francisco because of how much money it would cost to buy a home or rent an apartment. So that seductive salary for a job in those two towns isn't so seductive when you start adjusting for a higher rent or mortgage. Not to mention, the overall cost of stuff.

Geography matters. I remember I interviewed for a job in Shreveport, Louisiana. The job offered paid the same as the previous job I had in Lubbock, Texas. With a cost of living that was roughly the same in both cities, it seemed like it was doable for me. Until I started looking at apartments. Apartments cost a little bit more in Shreveport, and Louisiana also has a state tax. Between rent and paying state taxes, it made the salary I would get in Shreveport, tighter than I wanted, so I passed on the job. Of course, we weren't taking about $100,000 salary, but that's relative.

As far as where a $100,000 salary will go the furthest, one of the best places to get the most bang for your buck in Missouri is St. Louis. The City placed tenth on CNBC's list of the cities your $100,000 salary will go the furthest.

The list is limited to the top 76 largest cities in the United States, and it's dominated by cities in Texas. Texas cities making the list include Arlington, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Lubbock, Corpus Christi, and El Paso. Bluntly, I think you could just say you're going to get a lot of bang for your buck throughout Texas.

Number one on the list is Memphis, Tennesse. St. Louis coming in tenth though, is quite impressive. It's not a city that I would have thought would have made this list with it being dominated by Texas and more Southern cities.
