Everyone has their own little way of deciding the name of a beloved pet. When I got my first cat as an "adult", I chose to name him after a character in a Kevin Smith movie. Not necessarily because it was the best character or best movie, but I really liked the name Banky. Then there was his female companion, who I named after a beloved character on a show I was obsessed with at the time.

They often pronounced it a certain way, so I named her Pawleen after that.

When it came time to name the current brood, the name just kind of fell into place ... it's a nickname, it's not her REAL name, if you know what I mean. I named her Pollux, but we call her Kitten. And Husbando decided to name his cat after a character in a classic movie.

Yes, he named her after the cat from Pinocchio. Turned out later.... we should have chosen Figara, 'cos that cat is a girl.

What else do people name their pets? Here's a look at the top ten dog names for the year.

For the boy dogs:

  • Max
  • Charlie
  • Buddy
  • Cooper
  • Jack
  • Rocky
  • Bear
  • Duke
  • Toby
  • Tucker

For the girl dogs:

  • Bella
  • Lucy
  • Daisy
  • Lola
  • Luna
  • Molly
  • Sadie
  • Sophie
  • Bailey
  • Maggie

I don't see too many pop cultural names in there (or should I say..............PUP cultural.  You're welcome.), most of them look like regular names, or even people names.  I guess we're a little weird in how we choose names?  How did you choose the name of your pet? I'd love to hear the stories behind the decision!

Namingly yours,
Behka
