Metallica gave fans of classic rock act Kansas an on-the-nose treat last night during their WorldWired performance at Intrust Bank Arena, which is located in Wichita, Kansas. That's right — Metallica played Kansas in Kansas.

During the band's set, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo regaled the Midwestern audience with an unexpected instrumental rendition of "Carry on Wayward Son," Kansas' staple 1977 single.

In the clip above, shared by the group on Twitter Wednesday, Metallica frontman James Hetfield lets us know that the two rockers are about to "kick some ass" before they unleashed the righteous guitar tribute to the classic rock band that also brought us "Dust in the Wind." That song and "Carry On" — both of which landed in the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 back in the late '70s — are the two hits most associated with Kansas, who still record and tour on top of their AOR radio ubiquity.

Metallica have been finding a way during this album cycle to let Hammett and Trujillo provide a musical nod to the cities in which they are playing. As for the band's current plans, they're wrapping us the U.S. portion of their massive WorldWired Tour before heading overseas for the European leg of the live campaign behind 2016's Hardwired... to Self-Destruct.
