SFCC Celebrates Student-athletes’ Academic, Athletic Success
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) athletic department gathered with student-athletes, faculty and staff, Booster Club members, and fans to celebrate the successes of the 2023-2024 academic and athletic year inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center at the All-Sports Athletic Awards on Tuesday, May 7.
Booster Club President Steve Scheiner served as the master of ceremonies for the evening. SFCC President Dr Brent Bates welcomed those in attendance at the event.
Head soccer coach Michael Poropat recognized freshman defender/midfielder Connor Scott and freshman defender Mosiah Bonney for their Region 16 postseason awards. Scott was named All-Region 16 First Team, while Bonney was named to the All-Region 16 Second Team. Freshman midfielder Jervan Matthew earned First Team All-Conference in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference. Poropat shared his excitement for the upcoming season for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs.
Women’s and Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach Brad Hagedorn recapped the seasons for his teams and recognized multiple student-athletes. Hagedorn presented the Rowdie Award, an award given to the team’s outstanding student-athlete to, Tanner Maggard, women’s cross country; Justin Horn, men’s cross country; Claire Nichols, women’s track and field; and Addison Richards, men’s track and field. Hagedorn also announced that the women’s cross country team was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s Academic All-American Team.
Lady Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Nicole Collier recapped the team’s successful season and presented the Most Valuable Player award to Jaida Shipp. The Freshman of the Year award went to Myra Claas. The Heart and Hustle Award went to Madison Johnson. The Most Improved Player Award went to Meghan Campise. Coach Collier also recognized Shipp and Claas for being named First Team All-Region 16, as well as First Team All-Conference in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference. Johnson and Kimora McClure were named Second Team All-Conference in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference. Shipp was also recognized for being named Honorable Mention All-American.
Roadrunners Head Basketball Coach Matt Brown recognized Cliff Barrow for earning Men's Basketball All-Region 16 First Team. Isaiah Jackson was also acknowledged for earning Men's Basketball All-Region 16 Second Team. The awards are voted on by the Region 16 coaches. Barrow also earned All-Conference in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference. Jackson was also recognized for earning Second Team All-Conference honors in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference. Those awards are also voted on by the coaches in the Conference.
Coach Brown also presented academic awards to Jackson, Elijah Edwards, Steven Samuels, Ben Miller and Mosa Osagie. All the student-athletes had a GPA of above 3.3. The Unsung Hero Award went to Davide Berozzi. The Mr. Roadrunner Award went to Edwards.
Spirit Squad Head Coach Dawn Macklin-Gulick presented the Roadrunner Award to Amythist Spangler and Alayna Bryan. The Academic Achievement Award went to Katelyn Crafton, who has a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Shooting Sports Head Coach Sarah Manuel recapped another successful season for her team. Coach Manuel presented the Most Improved Award to Gracy Wilson. The Marathon Leader Award went to Nash McKenzie. The Impact Award was given to Daniel Younger-Loesing.
Esports Head Coach Jake Coleman presented the Breakout Player of the Year Award to Doug Tallon. The Most Versatile Player Award was shared by Jemyle Thomas and Trenton Toler. The Most Dependable Award went to Drake Miller. The Above the Call of Duty Award went to Trenton Hardy.
Coach Coleman also recognized his Rainbow Six Siege team for being the team with the best overall record. He also recognized the Rocket League team for finishing second in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports during the spring season and his Rainbow Six Siege team for winning a National Championship this spring.
Head Baseball Coach Jud Kindle recapped the season for his team and presented the Player of the Year and the Pitcher of the Year Awards to Tait Robertson. Carter Jenkins was named the Hitter of the Year. The Roadrunner Way Player of the Year Award went to Ryan Retone.
Softball Head Coach Michele Rupard talked about the softball season and presented the Offensive MVP Award to Bailey Haselhorst. The Defensive MVP Awards went to Jaelyn Winfrey and Becca Hall. The Rowdiest Roadrunner Award went to Maliah Kenney.
Athletic Director Darren Pannier closed the evening with a message for those in attendance, including the student-athletes and presented special awards to Steve Scheiner the current SFCC Booster Club President, Paul Coffelt Vice-President of the SFCC Booster Club, Carol McMullin Secretary of the SFCC Booster Club and Shelly Williams Treasure of the SFCC Booster Club for their many years of service. Each person received a framed jersey as a token of appreciation of their efforts from the Athletic Department.
Pannier recognized the importance of the work of the Booster Club to the athletic department. The Booster Club has raised $114,000 since 2019 to help support the Athletic Department. He also thanked the administration at State Fair Community College and the members of the athletic staff for their work. He thanked the student-athletes for their hard work in competition and in the classroom. Pannier also highlighted some of the individual and team accomplishments of the student-athletes and teams from the academic and athletic year.
