Here's a look at what's going on in our area this week! The events around this time of year get a little bit light so I thought I'd keep you updated with what's going on in the upcoming week too.

The Friends of the Boonslick Library in Sedalia will take donations of books and DVDS January 2 through January 9.

Items may be dropped off at Boonslick Regional Library on 219 West Third Street during regular library hours.  All items must be in good to excellent condition.  They would like fiction books, but will take some non fiction.  Donations will be used in the Friends of the Library book sale that will be held January 10 from noon to 5:00 p.m. and January 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room.  Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase new book bins for the Children’s Department.  For more information, call 660-827-7323.

The Shrine Club of Sedalia will have their monthly breakfast.

It’s open to the public and held at 1375 Elm Hills blvd.  It’ll happen on Saturday, January 4 from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m.  They’ll serve eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, juice, milk or coffee for $6.  For to go orders, call 660-281-3619 or 826-6171

The La Leche League of Sedalia will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, January 7 at 6:30 p.m.

They’ll meet at the Celebration Center, First United Methodist Church, 1701 West 32nd street.  La Leche League is dedicated  to providing education, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed.  The topic for this session will be “The Family and the Breastfed Baby”.  Babies are always welcome at meetings.  For more information, contact Pat Sturges at 660-221-5602.

Bothwell Education Center will hold a "Labor and the Birthday Party" Class on January 7 at 6:30 p.m. 

From labor and delivery to caring for a newborn, breastfeeding and infant safety, Bothwell Regional Health Center educates parents on what to expect. Our three separate classes are designed to provide the information you need to get off to a good start with your newborn.  Classes are free, but preregistration is required. Each class is taught by a nurse specially trained in pregnancy, labor, childbirth and parenting skills. Labor & the Birthday Party should be taken first. Taking Care of Your Newborn and Breastfeeding or Just Thinking About It can be taken in any order. Sedalia classes are held in the Bothwell Education Center on the southeast corner of 14th and Ingram. Classes in Warsaw are held at Bothwell Health Center – Truman Lake, 1765 Commercial. Participants should dress comfortably and casually.  To enroll for classes, please print and complete the registration form, and mail as directed.  You also may e-mail your information to classes@brhc.org or call (660) 827-9138. Class sizes are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly Buffet Dinner.

It’ll be held on the second Wednesday of the month, January 8 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.  It’ll be at the Knights of Columbus Hall on south 65.  Mike Hawk is the main cook.  They’ll serve two meats, sides, bread, drink and Mike’s famous chocolate pie.  The cost is $7 for an adult, children are welcome.

In collaboration with the American Cancer Society, Bothwell Regional Health Center offers Look Good…Feel Better. 

This free program teaches beauty techniques to women in active cancer treatment to help cope with treatment-related side effects that may  affect one’s appearance. The program addresses hair, skin, nails, and make-up. Women will learn ways to disguise hair loss with wigs, scarves, and other accessories. A complimentary cosmetic kit is provided. The next meeting is 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Susan O’Brien Fischer Cancer Center, Bothwell Regional Health Center, 601 E. 14th Street, Sedalia.  An RSVP is required to ensure seating and to reserve a cosmetic kit. Please call the American Cancer Society at (573) 635-4839 to reserve your makeup kit and request a wig, if needed. All services are provided free of charge.
