Here's a look at what's going on this weekend. 

Danny Brymer, adjunct instructor of music at State Fair Community College, will present a guitar recital at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus.

The concert is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.  Brymer will perform a varied program including Baroque music for lute, compositions by late Romantic-era Spanish composers, music by contemporary composers, and two of his own compositions.  Brymer joined the SFCC faculty in fall 2013. He directs the college’s jazz band, the Jazz Runners, and teaches guitar and music theory. He holds degrees in guitar performance and music theory from Colorado Christian University and Texas State University. The Simple Blessings Barn is having an interactive bridal event on Saturday, February 21.

Come out for a day of making memories and experiencing another part of planning for your big day. They’re striving to make this day as interactive as possible, not just a walk through and leave. The Columbia Police Department is dispatching a call from hibernation for all Polar Bears!

The 8th Annual Polar Plunge will be held on Feb. 21, 2015. Brave men and women from around the area will don costumes and swimwear and take “polar” dips into Bass Pro Shops Lake. Their Reason for Freezin’ . . . the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri! All proceeds from the event benefit the organization. This year’s goal is 500 Plungers and $85,000. Organizers across the state hope to break the million-dollar mark this year with 14 events.  The Polar Plunge is open to anyone 10 years or older who is a fan of having a good time for a good cause. The event is hosted by the Columbia Police Department and will take place at Bass Pro Shops Lake (3101 Bass Pro Drive). Day-of registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the Plunge starts promptly at 2:00 p.m. There will also be a PRE-check in on Friday, February 20, from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the SOMO Central Area Office (903 Old 63 North-Suite A, Columbia).  Each participant is required to raise a minimum $75 to participate in the Polar Plunge. All plunging Polar Bears will receive an official Polar Plunge commemorative shirt. Participants can also receive incentives for reaching fundraising goals: $300 – I Cool Backpack Cooler or Essential Full Zip Jacket, $500 – Yerba Knit Quarter Zip or Brookstone Compact Portable Power (or any $300 level incentive), $1,000 – Belford Jacket or Wenger Tech 4-wheeled Spinner Carry-on (or any $300 or $500 incentive), $2,000 – Ozark Insulated Jacket or Kenneth Cole Duffel Bag (or any $300, $500 or $1,000 incentive). No wet suits are allowed and shoes are required. The easiest and most efficient way to register and fundraise is online! Members of the State Fair Community College Student Dental Hygiene Club will collect oral care products from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Walmart Supercenter, 3201 W. Broadway, as part of the “America’s Tooth Fairy Smile Drive.”

The drive is a national campaign taking place in February, National Children’s Dental Health Month, to collect toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and rinse for at-risk children and teens.  The donated products will be given to non-profit organizations. SFCC’s club will donate the products they collect to the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri and give an oral health presentation to members.  The Dental Hygiene students also will collect oral care products Feb. 12-15 in the Parkhurst Student Commons and Feb. 17-20 in the Fred E. The first annual Dodgeball Tournament will take place February 21.

The pool play begins at 3:00 p.m. and the winner of each pool advances to bracket play. Bracket play will start at approxiately 7:30 p.m. Each team is guaranteed three games. All players must be 18 years old by July 1, 2014. Six to eight players per team, teams must include two female players. Prizes will be given to the teams with the best uniforms. On February 21, 2015 the Muddy Creek 4-H Saddle Club will be hosing a Chili Supper and Auction at Our Savior Lutheran Church at 3700 W. Broadway Sedalia.

The fundraiser will benefit our annual Muddy Creek Mounted Madness Youth Horse Show on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in September. Dinner will be $5.00 and will include dessert, drink, and your choice of 1 of the following Entrees (Baked Potato Bar, Cup of Chili, Hot dog or Chili dog) Additional entrees will be $2.00. The American Legion and Auxiliary Post 305 of Cole Camp will have their second annual Homestyle Supper.


They’ll have roast beef and ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, homemade bread, hot German Potato salad, cole slaw, and all the pie and cake you can eat. Adult tickets in advance are $8, at the door it goes up to $9. For children aged 6-12, the cost is $3, and pre school children eat free. Matching funds will be met by Thrivent Financial. Come and support your local American Legion and Legion Auxiliary. The event will held at the Legion Building on February 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The Family Fun Night will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015.

It’ll be at Convention Hall in Liberty Park from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Come out to Convention Hall for a night filled with fun, food, and BINGO! You can win a variety of (small) prizes and enjoy an affordable night out with your family and friends. Pre-register at the Parks Office by February 17. $20 per family of 5 or $5.00 per person.

The Applewood Christian School will have a senior trip fundraiser.

It’ll be held on March 22 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the St Paul’s Lutheran School Gymnasium. They will have a silent auction featuring a Waterloo Tool chest, handmade wooden boxes, handmade pottery, jewelry, Hallmark items, Russell Stover, home items, and local gift certificates.
