I haven't had small children in my life for some time now.  After all, I'm divorced now, and besides, the girls are in college. They don't come by and spend a lot of time rooting through by bathroom, so I don't have to worry much about them thinking something is candy when it's not.
Which, I'm sure, it something a lot of parents had to deal with.  But actually, the problem goes a lot deeper than I realized. According to the Pettis County Health Center, a young child dies every 12 days in our country from poisoning.  So, what can we do to help this situation, and stop the kids from getting into medicines? Well, there are a few little things you can keep in mind if you have little ones.

Keep in mind, it only takes a little bit of time for a kid to get somewhere they shouldn't be.  I think anyone who has ever met a toddler knows that. And, the little ones are very interested in every little thing, and they'll climb up stuff to get to it.  And, as we know, child-resistant doesn't mean it's child proof. If they're not being watched, they'll find a way - even if you only left them alone for a minute.

Well, Poison Prevention Week is coming up in March.  It's actually the 17th through the 23rd this year. It's a good time to remind ourselves to be vigilant! I mean, after all, isn't an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure?
So, here are some tips straight from Safe Kids Worldwide:

1.  Put all medicine up and away, out of children’s reach and sight.

2.  Remember to keep visitors’ purses, bags and coats out of reach as well, as they may contain medicine.

3.  Put medicine away immediately after every use, even if you need to give another dose in a few hours.

4.  Save the Poison Help number in your phone: 1-800-222-1222.

Here's hoping that you and your family stay safe, and you never have to deal with this. Maybe when we're doing our spring cleaning, we can do some spring safety, too!

Medicinallly yours,

Behka
