If you do an online search for haunted locations in Missouri, you're going to see one place over and over on just about every single list that comes up. It's usually at or near the top of these lists, and this place is pretty close to us. It's reputation as a haunted location has brought out TV crews for various news reports and paranormal shows over the years. It even has billboards along the major interstates advertising its ghost tours. The haunted location is the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City.

The Missouri State Penitentiary accepted its first inmate in 1836 and was in operation for over 168 years. In 1967 Time Magazine called it “the bloodiest 47 acres in America.” 40 inmates were executed in the Missouri State Penitentiary's gas chamber between 1937 and 1989. The prison has been featured on TV shows like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Asylum, and there are a ton of YouTube videos about the prison and its haunted history.

Even though it is no longer used as a prison, the Missouri State Penitentiary is open to the public for tours. In fact, they have a lot of different types of tours, including several haunted tours. There are two-hour and three-hour ghost tours available to the public, in addition to a three-hour ghost hunt class, and even overnight ghost investigation events! You can get details on all the different ghost/paranormal tours online, or if you're boring not interested in ghosts, you can also find out about the regular history tours offered at the penitentiary.
