Lorde may have only been born in 1996, but her heart is with the '80s. Earlier today, she covered Phil Collins' decade-defining hit, "In the Air Tonight."

She performed it during an appearance on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge program, the entirety of which can be streamed here, with the song coming at roughly the 2:13:00 mark. The station teased the segment by tweeting out a couple of clips of it, including the iconic drum fill, which are embedded below.

Prefacing the song, Lorde said that she had been aware of him as a kid, but that "it wasn't until I got older that I really realized how magical he was, and I sort of went through this crazy journey of all the Genesis stuff and all his own records. ... He just is such a pioneer, you know? His melodies and his drums -- I'm just so inspired by him, and he pushes me to be better."

She added that she's never met him, but that, if she did, she "would just melt into a little pool where I think he'd be like, 'Oh no, it's a little pool in front of me, not a person.' It might be a bit of a mess."

Earlier this month, as Pitchfork noted, Lorde appeared on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, where she expanded on precisely why Phil Collins appeals to her. “My favorite pop males are the guys that sound like a combination of your boyfriend and your dad," she said. "That’s Phil.” She then sang moments from Collins' "Take Me Home."

Covers are a long-standing tradition for guests to Live Lounge, with Muse, Royal Blood, Brian Fallon of the Gaslight Anthem among the many acts who have performed other artists' songs over the years. More recently, former One Direction singer Harry Styles tackled Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain."
