Thousands of third, fourth and fifth grade students from area school districts have benefited from Daum Escape for many years.

Once again, Daum Museum of Contemporary Art will sponsor the 14th Daum Escape Oct. 15 through Dec. 14, which is an arts education program held on the State Fair Community College Sedalia campus.

During the Daum Escape, students and teachers arrive at 10 a.m. and participate in an hour-long, docent-led tour of current exhibitions. Students receive art-related information and education materials about the museum’s exhibitions and Sedalia. Students can bring a brown bag lunch to eat in the Parkhurst Student Commons.

Vicki Weaver, curator of education, said the Daum Escape exposes students to contemporary art and gives teachers information to help them incorporate arts education into their history, language arts, science, and social studies curricula.

To prepare for the event, the museum offers a free Daum Escape Professional Development and Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) Practicum for teachers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the museum. VTS is an innovative, student-centered and research-based teaching method. VTS uses art to build the capacity to observe, think, listen, and communicate.

Teachers receive coaching in VTS techniques through direct participation. They also receive curriculum guides and hands-on activities so they can return to the classroom and familiarize students with the VTS process they will encounter at the Daum Escape.

Lunch will be served in the museum to all participating teachers. Registration for the professional development day is requested by Oct. 5, but late registration is accepted until the workshop is full.

Daum Escape is free, and limited funds may be available to help with transportation costs. Call the museum at (660) 530-5888 for details.
