It's been a hard couple of years for the kids here in Sedalia. I'm sure everyone knows by now that suicide is a problem nationwide. And it's hard to know what you can do to help.  I mean, you can tell people you're there to listen, or that you want to help, but sometimes you just don't know the signs or indicators. It can make you feel helpless.  Well now, it looks like we've got a step in a positive direction coming to Sedalia.

Memory Lane Foundation is offering a Mental Health First Aid Training class with the National Council for Behavioral Health. It's meant to teach anyone from parents and family to teachers, friends and neighbors how to help a young person who might be in crisis. According to their press release:

Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults to regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a five step action plan to help young people both in crisis and non-crisis situations.

Finally, some concrete things we can do! It'll be Thursday, February 15th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and they'll even provide lunch! It'll be held at Generations, 506 S Ohio Avenue, right next to Fitter's 5th Street.  Make sure you RSVP, because I'm hoping the class is packed. Send your name, phone number, and a company you  might represent to Memory Lane at their email: miffsp@gmail.com.  The first thirty people will be guaranteed a spot, after that they may have to limit the audience.

Let's treat this like the crisis it is and get some first aid training.

Behaviorally yours,

Behka
