What’s The Deal With Cats And Boxes?

We are cat owners. Our house is shared with animals. We have cat toys, cat towers, cat beds, special blankets for them to sleep on, you name it. But for some reason, anytime we get a package in the mail.... that box is the most wanted thing in the entire house.

Oh, that special cat bed that you bought just for me? I'd rather have the box it came in!

So what's the deal? Why do they love these stupid cardboard boxes so much? Well, apparently it's an instinctual thing. According to Live Science,

While inside a box, cats feel that they cannot be snuck up on from behind or the side — anything that wants to approach them must come directly into their field of vision. In effect, such hiding spaces allow them to watch the world around them without being seen....Boxes also provide cats with a cozy, safe place to sleep, which is very important given that the felines sleep for up to 20 hours a day.

BUT THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT YOU THE BED! So you would have a comfy place to sleep all dang day!  And frankly, if you think you're hiding, you're not doing a great job. I can totally see you.

............Fine. I admit it. I can see you being cute. Keep the dang box.
