Have you ever been in a work environment that was just toxic? It is so easy for an office or shop or whatever to go from harmonious to chaotic, and all it takes is one bad manager or boss. I'm lucky in that I've got some good ones now, people that are clear in what they want and appreciate the work we do.

It hasn't always been this way.

I had a boss once who would routinely tell his staff that if we needed help with something, we should come to him without reservation and he would step in and help. Well, that's what he SAID. What he did was something else. I swear, every time I'd go up and ask for help, he would either dismiss me or actually laugh in my face. And it wasn't just me, it was several other employees there, too. There were many occasions when I would get so angry and frustrated with management that I would just hide in a corner and cry. While I get that he wasn't there to make me feel good, he wasn't there to bring me down, either. I thought management was supposed to encourage and support people.

Another boss I had was a sweet man but he had... vices. He lived on site at the store I worked at, and would routinely go through a bottle of Wild Turkey every night. And of course, I had to wake him up on more than one occasion and ask him to put on pants. It wasn't fun at the time, but hey, it makes for a good story. College jobs.

One office I worked for weren't necessarily bad bosses, they were just disorganized to the point of ridiculousness. I was supposed to have certain paperwork in order to do my job properly, etc. They were supposed to send me that paperwork every week. I'd request the papers, not get them, and then they'd get mad at me for not having them. More than once I would ask what the proper protocol was for, example, dress and ID. They told me I should have a shirt from the company and an ID badge. I told them I had never received these, and then I got written up for not having them. How can I have them if you don't give them to me? Do you want me to just draw your logo on my shirt myself?  I guess I shouldn't be that surprised, they met weekly in a fast food joint for company meetings, so... yeah. College jobs.

Another job I had featured a guy who literally would ask me questions about my personal private time (you know what I mean) in front of other employees and clients. I would complain to the top brass and would be told that I should just "ignore it" or "deal with it". I was young then, and didn't know better. Now I'm 100% sure they would get SUED, but hey. Hindsight is twenty/twenty. College jobs.

Having those kind of experiences to draw from makes me really appreciate what I've got now, and wanting to make sure to keep it. Sure, I'm not going to be perfect (nobody is), but dangit if they ask me to do something, I'mma do it, and I'm gonna do my best. Because I don't want to have to go back to a job where you have to ask your boss to put pants on.

What about you? Have you ever had a bad experience with a boss or manager? You don't have to name names. Let's commiserate about it together!

Bossily yours,
Behka
