The Director of ‘Tank Girl’ Has a ‘Strong Vision’ for a ‘She-Hulk’ Movie

If anybody knows a thing or two about fun and empowering comic book movies, it’s Rachel Talalay. In 1995’s Tank Girl, Talalay introduced audiences to the comics’ bizarre world of armored vehicles and mutated kangaroos, and Tank Girl would quickly become a cult classic. You can hardly go to any kind of comic or movie convention without seeing a handful of Tank Girl cosplayers these days, and the film has even earned its fair share of critical reevaluation over the past few years. If Talalay were to make a movie like Tank Girl today, odds are good that fans would flock to its unique vision and punk girl-power vibe. So Hollywood, when Talalay says she’s got a good idea for another superhero movie, maybe you should take her at her word?

In a recent interview with Vice (via ComicBookMovie), Talalay sat down to talk about the struggles of making Tank Girl and the industry’s slow acceptance of women-led blockbuster films. The whole thing is a worthwhile read for those interested in documenting some of the struggles of women directors in Hollywood, but perhaps one of the more interesting parts of the film is Talalay’s idea for a She-Hulk movie:

I have such a strong vision of what She-Hulk should be. The difference between She-Hulk and Hulk is that she loved being She-Hulk. She was the Tank Girl of earlier days in terms of being able to say what she wanted, and when she became She-Hulk, it was like an opening of the door to freedom, to be the person that you wish you could be. That you’re stopped from being as a woman. And that’s the version of She-Hulk that I would love to embrace.

Nailed it. As Vice notes, though she denies it, Talalay was rumored to be on the shortlist for Marvel’s upcoming Captain Marvel movie, so it is possible that the director is already on their radar for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Talalay continues to work regularly in television as well  —  she’s directed episodes of The Flash, Supergirl, and Doctor Who in the past few years  —  so if Marvel decides that She-Hulk is a better fit for television, well, Talalay is the right woman for the job there, too. She-Hulk may not be as familiar a character for the casual fans, but as the comic book readers know, she’s become a pretty important and complex character in that universe. She-Hulk. Talalay. Make it happen, Disney.
