On September 16, 1968 the doors were opened for 436 students at State Fair Community College. With one building measuring approximately 35,000 square feet, the campus came to life.

Plywood U. This was a nickname given to State Fair Community College back in it's early days. If you take a step back in time, you'll see the progression of how it all came about.

The Junior College District of Sedalia was created and approved by voters on April 5, 1966. A name was needed for the new junior college so a contest was held. Appropiately the name of the contest was-“Name the College”.  A  Smith-Cotton High School senior, Brenda Weathers, came up with the new name.  On April 10 of that same year, the college officially became known as State Fair Community College.

To commemorate the 50-year event, a celebration will take place over a year's time. Kicking off the event will be the Rockin' Anniversary Celebration from 1-9 p.m.on Sunday, September 16. It's a free event open to the public.

Hamburger or hot dog meals will be served at a cost of $6.00. Live music will be provided by Dirt Road Addiction. There will be bounce houses and activities for the kids along with a car show from 11am to 4pm. Both the women and men's soccer teams will be playing that day. A movie will be held from 7-10 pm with fireworks capping off the celebration that evening.
