Sedalia Public Library Reopening With Programs for All Ages [INTERVIEW]

After what surely feels like ages, the Sedalia Public Library is finally almost ready to reopen.  The Carnegie Building is one of those Sedalia staples that it can be hard to imagine life without. 

So now that the repairs are finally finished and the place is back in business, I know a lot of us couldn't be happier. The library will be opening up again for use on Dec. 16. There will even be a chance for tours on Dec. 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. so you can see all the work that's been done and all the improvements firsthand. It's also a good chance to remind yourself about all the historical significance of the building.

The Sedalia Public Library was the first Carnegie Grant awarded in Missouri. The Board of Trustees received word of the $50,000 grant in the fall of 1899. After securing the property on which to build, and having gained voter approval of a tax to support the library, the Board laid the cornerstone in 1900. The building was completed in July 1901. Dedicated in 1901, the library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

While the building itself is rich in history and memories, now that the library is back better than ever, it's ready to make more memories. I got to talk to Amy Elvers, the children's librarian with the Sedalia Public Library, to talk about the big reopening and all the great stuff they've got planned for the coming months.

Make sure you go by the grand reopening tours on Dec. 15 and see what's changed and what's just as great as ever. Then, bring the whole family by the library after it opens up on the 16th at 9:00 a.m. sharp. You'll be pleasantly reminded of what a valuable asset the building, the people, the programs, the technology and the books themselves are to our community.
