While the main issue at Monday night’s City Council work session (March 3) was a final review of the 2015 fiscal budget, the item on the agenda that garnered the most attention was amending the smoking ordinance for the City of Sedalia.

If the amendment to the ordinance had passed, the definition of what constitutes a bar would have changed and the ordinance would have exempted five local bars from the smoking ban. Following discussion among the council members, the vote remained deadlocked at 4 to 4, with 1st Ward representatives Stephen Galliher and Jo Lynn Turley, along with 3rd Ward councilman Wiley Walter and 4th Ward councilman Tolbert Rowe voting against amending the ban.

The yes votes came from 2nd Ward’s Rebecca LaStrada and Wanda Monsees, 3rd Ward councilman Bob Cross and 4th Ward’s Larry Stevenson. Sedalia Mayor Elaine Horn broke the tie by voting not to amend the ban, so the ban remains in effect under the same conditions as when it was passed last year.

KSIS talked to Mayor Horn after the meeting. Listen to the interview below.
