Taking a page from Radiohead and Beyonce before them, Danish indie-rock duo the Raveonettes surprisingly released their seventh album today with absolutely no advance notice.

Helmed by M83 producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, 'Pe’ahi' follows the band's 2012 release, 'Observator.' Band member Sune Rose Wagner wrote in a guest column for Q magazine that the album was inspired by her father's sudden death this past Christmas Eve, and is named for a surfing hot spot in Maui that is overrun with "meth-fueled crazies" during the off-season. She said the pair spent four months working 12-hour days creating 'Pe’ahi.'

The band also unveiled two songs from the album: the unconventional opener 'Endless Sleeper,' which you can listen to above, and the driving, electronics-heavy 'Sister,' which is here:

"This album is a huge leap forward both sonically and musically for us," Wagner writes in the magazine. "We incorporated new ideas into each song such as choirs, harps, digital bit crushing, rhythmic changes, unconventional song structures, different ways of singing, staccato, machine gun guitar picking, a somewhat schizophrenic universe."
