Lost & Found: Remember When Pink Floyd Were Crazy Psychedelic?

That weird-looking guy with the crazy hair started Pink Floyd before frying his brain with Quaaludes and LSD. That’s one of the down sides of some drugs that people often forget about: Sometimes you don’t overdose or get addicted and lose your home and family. Sometimes you just lose your damn mind.

But Syd Barrett made what some Pink Floyd fans consider to be the band’s best music ever. Barrett founded the band and wrote almost all of the songs on their first album, ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.’ If you haven’t heard it, it’s definitely worth checking out. Barrett was an excellent songwriter and musician. Too bad about those drugs, though.

This song, ‘Jugband Blues,’ is from the band’s second album, ‘Saucerful of Secrets.’ By the time they recorded this album, Barrett’s grip on the band, as well as on reality, had begun to deteriorate. ‘Jugband Blues’ was the only song he contributed to the band’s second album. He left soon after that to pursue an ill-fated solo career.

Barrett eventually gave up on music and moved to Cambridge with his mother. He reportedly walked the entire 50 miles from London to Cambridge. He lived in his mother’s home, painting and puttering around. Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour made sure Barrett got all his royalty checks, and Barrett lived in obscurity until his death in 2006.
