Watch Meshell Ndegeocello Cover Nick Drake’s ‘Pink Moon’

Singer-songwriter Meshell Ndegeocello recently sat down for a chat with our sister site the Boombox. She had a lot of cool things to say about music, the music industry and race. You should check it out.

But she also performed a few songs during her visit, including one by eternal badass Nina Simone and an old-school hip-hop classic. But our favorite is her stripped-down take on Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon.' You can watch the video above.

Back by an acoustic band, Ndegeocello wraps her warm voice around Drake's haunting signature song. She introduces the cut by pointing out her appeal to 'Pink Moon.' “It’s circular motion is entrancing to me," she says. "It’s just a song I like to play. He had so much going for him, and he was about to experience some great fame and he just outed himself. . . . That must’ve been an intense sadness.”

During his short life, Drake struggled to get his music heard. Two years after he released his third and final album in 1972 -- the classic 'Pink Moon' -- he died of a drug overdose at the age of 26. The British singer-songwriter suffered from depression, and his death is still speculated as a suicide. Since then, his cult has expanded to the point where he's become an indie-rock icon.
