In our house, we have our preferences when it comes to TV. I like comedies, but I also like some variety. Husbando would watch either MASH or Law and Order all day if it was possible.Lately, though, I've found that I've strayed a little from my normal default channel, Investigation Discovery. I do love me some Dateline and any show where someone is going to be convicted from DNA evidence.  I have dallied a bit though, and find myself watching a lot of Animal Planet and National Geographic. And now, it seems like I have a thing for shows about Veterinarians. In fact, on my DVR at any given time, you could probably find at least three of these.

I like different shows for different reasons, so I'll fill you in.  Here are my top five favorite shows about vets.

5. Dr Oakley: Yukon Vet.

There's so much to like about this show. I like Dr Oakley and her tough but sweet nature. I like that she can see so many different kinds of livestock and bears and wombats and just deal with it all like it's nothing. And the scenery at some of the locations is just awesome. I've never been to Alaska, so this gives me a taste of what it's like out in the remote reaches without me actually having to give up cell phone service.

4. The Incredible Dr. Pol.

Dr. Pol just seems like the kind of Grandpa everybody knew. Here he is, well into his senior years, still working with animals because he just loves it. That's very admirable. I also like the interactions between him and family, who all work at the clinic. I particularly like when Dr. Pol gives Charles a hard time. But I also like that he has a three legged office cat!

3. Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet.

I like Dr. Jeff a lot. He seems like the kind of guy my Dad would hang out with. He's a little bit hippie, and a little bit crotchety. He's been through so much! He's had cancer, knee surgery, but none of it stops him. He's got staff with him that he coached in track when they were in high school. I also like that he makes a point to try to make his services affordable to people who don't have a lot of money. They have a "charity" account that they use to make up the costs for people who can't pay. They even go down to Native American reservations in their area and towns in Mexico to provide FREE vet services to overpopulated areas. That's just a good dude, right there.

2. Dr. K's Exotic Animal ER.

This one I like for two different aspects of the show. First of all, Dr. K doesn't see dogs, cats, or any other common pet. She sees marsupials, monkeys, bunnies, birds, snakes, lizards, anteaters, squirrels, tons of different animals. The only dog she treats is her father's pet (and he wears bunny ears when he comes in, so cute). I like the variety of different animals and treatments. I also like the mother/daughter bond that Dr. K has for her apprentice, Dr. Thielen. She's only been out of vet school for a couple of years, and Dr. K has taken her under her wing with her incomparable experience. It's nice!

1. The Vet Life.

The Vet Life is my favorite. I love all the vet stuff, but I also like them and their interactions with each other. They take their work seriously, but they don't take themselves seriously. They're all genuine friends and you can tell, you can't fake that. The show also lets you in about their families and their own personal struggles - like health issues, accidents, moving, and dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. It's just a fun show and I love it to BITS.

Anyway, now you know all about my weird thing with shows about animal doctors. Do you watch any shows like these? What's your favorite?

Veterinarianly yours,
Behka
