It’s a good week to be Robin Wright, both for Wonder Woman love and her House of Cards rise to power, but the increasingly-quaint Netflix drama doesn’t yet have the Season 6 renewal to explore Claire’s future. Should it return, bosses promise that Claire will be the one tearing down the fourth wall, which could drastically reinvent the show.

You’re warned of full spoilers for House of Cards Season 5 from here on out, but despite her roundabout ascension to the Presidency, Wright’s Claire Underwood largely ignored the audience her husband is so fond of talking to. There was a glance last season, an aside or two this year, and that chilling final “my turn,” but House of Cards showrunners Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese tell TVLine Season 6 would see Claire very much leading the charge:

We were trying, in a disciplined way, to navigate that shift at the end of last season [when Claire first talked to the camera] and not overplay it [this season]. But I think it’s inevitable that that will need to be explored further [in Season 6].

The question is going to be how. I don’t think she’s going to do it the way Francis did it. How she does it could be really exciting … Claire’s needs from the audience are unique to her.

And where the series was once rumored to end with the culmination of its two-season order, showrunners are not currently envisioning a final year. “Until one, or both, of them is dead,” jokes Gibson, “you [still] have a show.”

Netflix’s recent cancellation habit could extend to House of Cards Season 6, but stay tuned for renewal news in the meantime, and catch the first five seasons streaming.
