Healthy U’s Community C25K (Couch to 5K) program kicks-off at the beginning of March.

Healthy U is a community health and wellness initiative, with the kick-off meeting taking place at First United Methodist Church Celebration Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Information about the program and training schedules will be distributed at the meeting. The program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. A press release from Bothwell Regional Health Center says the deadline to register is Monday, March 5.

The Healthy U C25K program is designed to prepare participants to walk, jog or run a 5K, or 3.1 miles. Registered participants must be at least 18 years old and will be provided with an eight-week training schedule that includes at least three required workouts per week.

BRHC says that each week the training schedule adds duration leading up to the final week when participants will be prepared to complete a 5K. Participants should check with their health provider before starting an exercise program.

“We want to encourage our community to get moving, and the Couch to 5K program is an excellent way to get individuals of all fitness levels involved,” said Melissa Boeschen, community outreach coordinator at Bothwell Regional Health Center and chairperson of the Healthy Living Action Group, which is responsible for coordinating the Healthy U program.

The program leads up to the Bothwell Foundation’s Lub Dub 5K/10K Run/Walk on April 28. Although participants are encouraged to participate in the Lub Dub Run, it’s not required. Participants can register individually or as a member of a team of four to eight people. If registering as a team, at least one team member must attend the kick-off meeting. Weekly random drawings for prizes will be conducted starting the week of March 5. To be eligible, participants must complete three workouts outlined for that week as designated by their respective training schedule.

“Completing a 5K is an attainable goal, and having an event to train for is a great tool to keep you motivated,” Boeschen said. “We’ll have some pretty great prizes to give away on a weekly basis, which also helps keep participants engaged.”

Registration forms are available in the marketing office at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Pettis County Health Center, Pettis County MU Extension, and Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri. Event details and forms also can be found on the Healthy U Pettis County Facebook Page under “Upcoming Events.
