Mike Robertson, driver's education instructor for Sedalia School District 200, explained the program that he and Ashley Young teach during the summer starting June 6.

The 20-day program has 30 hours of classroom time, six hours of driving time and 12 hours of observation time, Robertson said.

The driver's ed students meet at the Little Theater at the Smith-Cotton Junior High weekdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Driving takes place from 7 to 10 a.m. and from 12 to 3 p.m. Daily by appointment.
Typically, Robertson takes three students with him at a time, driving a vehicle that Woody Nissan donates every year.

And you don't have to be a District 200 student to take advantage of the program, he added. He has also taught students from Smithton, Sacred Heart, Northwest, Green Ridge, Versailles and Windsor.

The fee for the driver's education class is $180. Applications are available at the counselor's office at the Smith-Cotton Junior or Senior High, at the Central Board Office, and also online at the Sedalia District 200 website.

“We just feel our students are better prepared than most,” Robertson said of the program.
