At one point, it seemed like the 2018 Smashing Pumpkins reunion might have brought the band's original lineup back together for the first time in nearly 20 years. Instead, it's devolved into a lot of innuendo and accusations regarding the absence of bassist D'arcy Wretzky — and now Wretzky has offered her side of the story in a rare interview.

Speaking with Alternative Nation, Wretzky painted a picture of a reunion that was crippled by lack of communication from the start, describing discussions that transpired via text message without ever leading to a real-life gathering of the musicians in the same room — to say nothing of actually playing together.

As Wretzky sees it, Corgan never intended to get her in the lineup for the reunion, and she refutes his claims that he's tried to get her to play with them before, only for her to demur. Essentially describing her role in the band as a victim of his insecurities, she insists she's never been asked to rejoin the Smashing Pumpkins for anything — and in fact has willfully been excluded.

"He says that he’s invited me to come out and play for all of these things, which is a complete lie. He’s never invited me to anything," said Wretzky. Recalling her efforts to get in touch with him during his recent solo tour, she mused, "He thinks it’s a privilege for anyone to be in his presence, so therefore he shouldn’t have to tell me, and I shouldn’t have to be invited."

It's a wide-ranging conversation worth reading in full, and Pumpkins fans may find it illuminating to read Wretzky's recollections of her departure from the lineup, previous attempts to patch the band back together and her account of what she's been up to all these years. Despite all the hurt feelings, she claims not to view Corgan with anger.

"It took me a long time to not care, and not hate him. Now I don’t hate him, I’m back to where I was at the beginning," said Wretzky. "I laugh at his antics, and I’m going to go about my own life, but I don’t feel sorry for him. I do think he needs to get an MRI, though."
