According to a report from the Missourinet, there's a severe shortage of correctional officers at the 22 correctional facilities in Missouri.

In the report, a shortage of 500 officers is reported. Add in that the state’s institutions are currently at capacity and you definitely have a dilemna.

The major contributor to the staffing shortfall? Pay. According to Missouri Department of Corrections (DOC) Director Anne Precythe, there are some correctional officers that have been working for over 10 years and are only earning what others are paid coming off the street.

A serious need for probation and parole assistants is also plaguing the Missouri DOC. An incentive has been put into place for current employees to seek new workers. A referral fee of $250 will paid to the current employees if a new hire completes basic training.
