Marshall Philharmonic Performing with Kansas City Symphony at Free Concert

The Marshall Philharmonic has been around for 50 years.  They're celebrating this with a collaboration with the Kansas City Symphony on Wednesday, April 10 at the Harold L. Lickey Auditorium of the Bueker Middle School, starting at 7:00 p.m.  The KC Symphony rarely travels, so this is a big deal that they're coming to Marshall. And it's a big deal that the Marshall Philharmonic has gone 50 years now, making excellent music year after year.

Kids, I know a lot of us have some music memories.  Usually when you're in school, at some point they have you join a choir or pick up a recorder or something like that.

Well, for me, we had a violin in our attic.  My grandmother had played it, my mother had played it, my sister had played it and now it was my turn.  So in fifth grade I joined the after school orchestra program.  You would meet on the stage area of the Horace Mann Elementary School after classes, and Mrs. Kappelman would take us through rudimentary stuff.  We learned things like tuning, how to hold a bow, how to read music, and all that good stuff.  I remember being very encouraged by playing a song I knew, like "Mary Had A Little Lamb."   There was also a sense of pride felt when you'd bring your instrument in before school and walk in the back door to drop it off, and sitting there plunking on your instrument when the other kids were getting ready to get on the bus.

That love of the orchestra stayed with me for years.  I took orchestra classes all throughout middle school and high school and even made it to first chair a couple of times in my high school career.  Then I took one year of orchestra in college, and that was it for me.  But I've loved attending different events with the Sedalia Symphony, and heartily encourage any and all local music.
