This weekend is a big deal for those of us in Pettis County.  The Pettis County Commission is going to encourage retail sales by offering a Sales Tax Holiday.

The tax holiday starts this Friday and continues to Sunday. The county will offer 1% and the state will have a 4.225% sales tax break, which offers the average consumer about will save about 5%.  Things like clothing, school supplies, computers, and other things like that are exempt from sales tax. One thing that I didn't know: You cannot put items on layaway during the weekend and pay for it later tax-free. You have to pay for the items during the tax-free holiday to get the exemption.

In fact, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue site, here's what you can get:

The sales tax exemption is limited to:

  • Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
  • School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
  • Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less
  • Personal computers – not to exceed $1,500
  • Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $1,500
  • Graphing Calculators - not to exceed $150

Back to school time is creeping up on us, and I wondered what you think about it. Are you going to save your back to school shopping for the tax holiday?  Are you going to to avoid it?  Does it help you to have this tax break, or does it not make a difference?

I don't have small ones around anymore, so I don't really think I'll be doing any shopping. But hey, I guess I could send out Husbando!

Happy Shopping,
Behka
