Hot off Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee is ready for his next project — which might end up being a script that’s been in the pipe for about 20 years, penned by none other than Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff. Lee is currently in negotiations to direct Benioff’s sci-fi thriller Gemini Man for Skydance.

Variety reports that Lee is in early talks to direct the project, which has been in some state of production or other for about two decades, with the most recent iteration of it having L.A. Confidential’s Curtis Hanson attached. Benioff’s script is about an aging NSA agent who wants to retire, but finds himself pursued by an assassin who happens to be a younger clone of himself. It sounds a lot like Rian Johnson’s Looper, but probably without all the time travel stuff.

In all this time, Benioff has made a pretty good career for himself and is now a co-showrunner of one of the most popular TV dramas of all time. Lee is a two-time Best Director Oscar winner and was nominated for a third back in 2000 for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The script sounds intriguing, and a director as visually adept as Lee would definitely do it justice if a deal is made. Let’s hope he irons out those frame rate kinks by the time he starts to film.
